MAP (Magnet Academic Program) Classes
Alvin's Magnet Academic Program (MAP) can be found in each of the eight junior high school campuses. The MAP Math/Science program pathway provides acceleration in Mathematics (8th grade math for sixth grade, Algebra I in seventh grade, and Geometry in eighth grade) and acceleration in Science whereas students complete 8th grade Science at the end of their seventh grade year. The Humanities pathway offers an integrated study of Language Arts and Social Studies for MAP Humanities students. The depth and complexity in these courses provides the level of rigor needed for our students to be successful in advanced secondary coursework. In addition, the program focuses on creative perpetual learners and nurtures individual abilities and talents. All fifth-grade students are considered for acceptance into the MAP program. Placement in MAP may occur for one or both pathways of the program.

National Junior Honor Society
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a prestigious organization that recognizes junior high school students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, character, and citizenship. Membership in NJHS is a reflection of a student’s commitment to academic achievement and personal integrity. At Alvin ISD, 7th grade and 8th grade students are invited to join NJHS based on their cumulative GPA from junior high courses. Once invited, students have the opportunity to engage in meaningful community service projects, develop leadership skills, and participate in activities that positively impact their school and community. NJHS fosters a culture of high expectations and personal growth, inspiring students to strive for excellence in all areas of their lives. Membership in NJHS not only celebrates academic success but also cultivates future leaders who are dedicated to making a difference.

PSAT
The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is a standardized test designed to help students prepare for the SAT and assess their readiness for college-level coursework. It evaluates skills in reading, writing, and math, providing valuable feedback on areas of strength and opportunities for improvement. The PSAT also introduces students to the format and content of the SAT, offering a low-stakes environment for building confidence in standardized testing. At Manvel Junior High, all 8th graders participate in the PSAT to gain early insights into their academic progress and college readiness. By testing at this level, students can identify their potential for advanced coursework in high school and beyond. Additionally, the PSAT experience fosters familiarity with the testing process, setting the foundation for future success on college entrance exams.
Academic UIL
Academic UIL (University Interscholastic League) competitions provide students with opportunities to showcase their talents and skills in various academic disciplines, including math, science, writing, public speaking, fine arts, and social studies. These contests challenge students to deepen their knowledge, think critically, and perform under pressure, fostering intellectual growth and academic excellence. At Manvel Junior High, the top three candidates in each event will be selected to represent us at the district level, where they will compete against peers from other schools in Alvin ISD. This recognition highlights their hard work and dedication while offering them a platform to excel.
