Awards publicly recognize meritorious service and outstanding achievement that distinguishes an individual or unit from others. They provide a means of recognizing individual cadets for their performance and participation in the MCJROTC program.

Outstanding Cadet Award. This award is presented annually to the cadet who distinguishes him/herself through:

1.      Consistent superior performance in all facets of the MCJROTC Leadership Education Course curriculum.

2.      Academic achievement in all academic subjects including MCJROTC.

3.      Exceptional qualities of leadership, discipline, character, military bearing, and military proficiency. 

Student Leadership Award.  Presented annually to any cadet who holds an elected office in an organization representing the student body.  The lamp of learning device will be used to indicate the civic nature of this award.

Officer Leadership Award.  Presented annually to cadet officers who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities, discipline, military bearing, and proficiency. 

Non-Commissioned Officer Leadership Award.  Presented annually to cadet staff non-commissioned officers and non-commissioned officers who demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities, discipline, character, military bearing, and military proficiency.

Civic Service Award.  Presented annually, this award will be used to recognize outstanding community service or noteworthy unit participation performed by a cadet.  Cadets must complete 20 hours of service in a single academic year to earn this award. 

Distinguished Conduct Award.  Presented annually to cadets whose conduct and demeanor are worthy of special recognition.  Individuals shall not have been the subject of any disciplinary action (ISS, ECO, suspensions, disciplinary write up, etc) for the entire academic year.

Best Drill Cadet.  Presented annually to cadets who distinguish themselves through leadership and superior performance in comparison to other cadets in close order drill.

Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Award.  Presented annually to the cadets who have maintained an “A” average in all academic subjects to include MCJROTC Leadership Education and/or be in the 10 percent of the class.

Arts and Academics Award.  Presented annually to cadets who participate in University Interscholastic League (UIL) competitions pertaining to academics or the arts.

Distinguished Military Training.  Presented annually to cadets who demonstrate superior performance in the academic phase of the MCJROTC curriculum and outstanding proficiency in all military aspects of the MCJROTC program. Cadets must have been grade eligible for promotion and pass the promotion test with an 80% for both promotion periods to earn this award.

Physical Achievement Award.  Presented annually to cadets who distinguish themselves in the area of physical fitness. To qualify for this award, a cadet must score at least 250 points or higher on the National Youth Physical Fitness Test which is administered twice a year.  While the test is given twice a year, the award may only be awarded once a year.

Superior Marksmanship Award.  Presented annually to any cadet who qualifies as a superior marksman either through placement in regional or national matches, or through a score of 270 or higher during an air rifle three position shooting competition.

Athletic Participation Award.  Presented annually to cadets who participate in University Interscholastic League (UIL) athletics. To qualify, the cadet must have been on the team for the entire season.

Longevity and Fidelity Award.  Presented to those cadets who have successfully participated in the MCJROTC program for two years and have met all of the requirements of Leadership Education I (LE I) and Leadership Education II (LE II) cadets.

Best Drill Squad Award.  Presented annually to those cadets comprising the best drill squad (team). The best drill squad is determined through competition with other drill squads in the following categories (Unarmed Drill Team versus Armed Drill Team):

1.      Overall academic grade of all cadets in the squad.

a.       Report card grades of every cadet on the team will be added for a total score.

2.      Regulation Unarmed Drill competition in March 2014.

Color Guard Award.  Presented annually to those cadets who comprise the unit color guard teams.  To be eligible for this award, the cadet must have participated in a minimum of three color guard performances and competed in at least one drill meet.

Drill Team Award.  Presented annually to those cadets who comprise the unit drill teams.  To be eligible for this award, the cadet must have participated in a minimum of three drill team performances and competed in at least one drill meet.

Band/Drum and Bugle Team Award.  Presented to those cadets who distinguish themselves in the school’s band/drum and bugle corps. 

Rifle Team Award.  Presented to those cadets who have distinguished themselves on the unit’s rifle team.

Recruiting Award.  Presented to those cadets who have contributed to the growth of the unit by taking an active role in recruiting cadets for the MCJROTC program.

In addition to the above awards established by the MCJROTC program, there are several awards that are sponsored by various civic organizations such as the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The National Sojourners, the Reserve Officer Association, the Women Marines Association, The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Military Order of World Wars, and the Marine Corps League.  The criteria for these awards are established by the respective organizations.

Top Male and Female Physical Fitness Tests (LE I).  Presented annually to first year cadets; based off of scores from the National Youth Physical Fitness Test. 

Top Male and Female Physical Training Team.  Presented annually to two cadets on the Physical Fitness Team; based off of scores at drill meet competitions. 

Top Three Shooters (LE I).  Presented annually to first year cadets; based off of the rifle qualification scores.

Top Three Shooters on the Shooting Team. Presented annually to three cadets on the Air Rifle Shooting Team; based off of official scores via shooting matches. 

The Gung Ho Award.  This unofficial motto of the US Marine Corps is an abbreviation for the Mandarin Gongye Hezhoushe which means "to work together".  Lt. Col. Evans Carlson was a military attache in the US embassy to China in the late-30s.When he returned to the States and the US entered WWII, Carlson was appointed commander of the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion. Recalling his time in China, Carlson chose gung ho as the motto for his elite battalion and by late 1942 was widely adopted throughout the Marine Corps as an expression of spirit and "can do" attitude.

For every platoon, one cadet will nominated by his or her peers as the cadet with this "gung ho" attitude.

Lettermen jackets will be purchased at the end of the academic year. Eligibility for a letterman jacket:

1.      A cadet finishing his/her second year in the MCJROTC program; he/she cannot be graduating at the end of the current academic year.

2.      Was grade eligible and competed at all competitions for the academic year.

3.      Team managers are eligible for lettermen jackets if he/she has displayed such initiative, leadership, and esprit de corps that he/she will be selected to attend the overnight drill meet competition and manage his/her respective team. Only one team manager per team will be selected. Input from platoon commanders will be required. Grade eligibility requirement applies.

c.       Armed Drill Team manager

d.      Physical Training Team manager

Alvin MCJROTC Leadership Education IV Scholarship.  A scholarship is awarded annually from the Alvin MCJROTC Booster Club. One cadet will be selected based off of the following criteria:

1.      Has successfully completed four years of MCJROTC Leadership Education.

2.      Has proof of an ACT or SAT score in preparation to attend college.

3.      Maintained the minimum of 20 hours of community service per academic year for all four years.

4.      Has submitted a typed essay on how MCJROTC Leadership Education has made him/her a better leader and citizen.

Christopher McCrackin Scholarship.  A scholarship is awarded annually from the Alvin MCJROTC Booster Club in memory of Christopher McCrakin. A cadet, student, then Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps who gave his life on November 14, 2005 in Iraq.  Lance Corporal Christopher McCrakin was taken from us too soon but that did not take away the impact he left behind with his motivation, patriotism, and esprit de corps.  The scholarship recognizes the impact a student has had within the Marine Corps Junior ROTC Program.  One cadet will be selected based off of his/her overall impact to the MCJROTC unit based off of his/her leadership, motivation, esprit de corps and patriotism.

1.      There is no minimum time in MCJROTC Leadership Education required.

2.      A minimum of 20 hours of community service is required.

3.      Has proof of an ACT or SAT score in preparation to attend college.
