AVID
Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Welcome to the Alvin High School AVID page!
AVID Expectations
Student Grades: AVID students are expected to maintain a grade of 75 or higher in all of their classes. Students are required and expected to attend teacher tutorials as often as possible to keep their grades above 75.
AVID Tutorials: AVID students are required to come to the AVID class on Tuesdays and Thursdays prepared with their Tutorial Request Form completed and participate to help them understand the material from other subjects.
AVID Binder: Students are expected to carry a 2.5-3 inch binder organized according to AVID guidelines. Students should carry the binder every day and in every class. This is non-negotiable.
Pencil Pouch: Students must keep a pencil pouch inside their binder with the following supplies - 2 black or blue ink pens, 1 or more red ink pens, 2 or more pencils, 1 eraser, 1 or more highlighters.
Focused Notes (FN): Focused Notes are the note-taking method of AVID. Mainly used during a class lecture, a class PowerPoint, a class reading, or a movie containing information for which the student must be responsible. To receive full credit, students must have the notes completed in the correct format, have revisions, have study questions and a summary. Not only do we want students to learn how to take notes, we want them to learn WHAT TO DO with the notes AFTER they take them.
Student Planner: Students must write any homework, tests, quizzes, projects (etc.) in their planner. The notes in the planner must be specific and detailed. Student planners are used to help with time management skills.
Homework: AVID students have homework every day. The homework consists of interacting with their Focused Notes from other classes. In addition, on Mondays and Wednesdays, students must complete the tutorial form (TRF) showing their critical thinking.
AVID Weekly Schedule
A Sample Week in the AVID Elective
Below you will find what the AVID school week would look like at Alvin High School. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we present AVID Curriculum. Our Curriculum is based upon W.I.C.O.R. (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading). Each Tuesday and Thursday we provide in class tutorials for AVID students to receive assistance in any subject. We have current college students come in class these days to help students problem solve and get the assistance they need.
