Just dance! To celebrate national Computer Science Education Week, 3rd-5th graders at Pomona, Don Jeter, and Nelson Elementary coded their own dance parties as they participated in the international #HourofCode. Hour of Code challenges schools and students to do one hour of computer programming during Computer Science Education Week. This year, AISD's students completed their Hour of Code by programming a dance party. They used blocks of code to choose different dancers, change their dance moves, make them respond to the music, and make them interactive as they worked through 10 computer science lessons. The #HourofCode activities introduce students to the fundamentals of computer science and provide them with an opportunity to try coding in a fun, interactive way, said Charles Bagley, AISD's Coordinator of Technology Integration, who helped organize the event. "Computer science offers our students life-changing and economic opportunities, whether they pursue careers in technology or not," Bagley said.

Inclusive teaching means presenting information in ways that are relevant and meaningful to each and every student. Discussion, hands-on learning experiences, and inquiry-based projects are all examples of inclusive teaching practices that have, again and again, been shown to improve academic achievement for all students. I challenge each school in Alvin ISD and across the nation and globe to join us in celebrating #InclusiveSchoolsWeek. To celebrate, please visit http://www.inclusiveschools.org #ISW2022 #InclusiveSchools

694,270! That is how many minutes our Alvin ISD third graders read during the first week of the NCAA Read to the Final Four! Congratulations to Nelson Elementary, Jeter Elementary, Disney Elementary, and Wilder Elementary! These schools won the district weekly travelling trophy for their feeder patterns! Read to the Final Four is an annual literacy initiative led by the 2023 NCAA® Men’s Final Four and Houston Local Organizing Committee (HLOC). The Read to the Final Four's purpose is to promote and inspire reading for third graders through a fun and engaging bracket-style competition. Alvin ISD is one of 11 school districts across the Houston area participating in this fun event. This week kicked off a five-week reading season. In January, 2023, there will be a school bracket seeding which will be composed of top 64 schools in the Houston area. In March, 2023, the top readers will be recognized during Men’s Final Four week and on March 31, 2023, the winning schools will be announced at the Reese’s Final Four Friday event with a cash prize given to the school with the most participation and minutes logged!
