Glenn York Elementary, with the help of parent Chari Westcott, has created a unique new club! The York Elementary Sewing Club was started by Ms. Westcott due to her love of quilting. The club is open to 3rd-5th grade students.  The club opened this semester with more than 60 students signing up in just a matter of hours! However, due to space limitations, there are 21 students participating.

“The Sewing Club has allowed students to not only learn sewing skills, but also math skills, history, safety, creative thinking, and drawing,” shared Westcott. “They are building relationships with the other kids in their ‘sewing bee.’”

So far, the students have made their own pin cushion and a fabricated felt animal to learn stitching skills. They have been shown the parts of a sewing machine and allowed to practice sewing using the machine.

“The community has really stepped up as many of  the sewing machines we use were donated through the Shadow Creek Facebook page, while some were purchased on Facebook Market for a reasonable price,” said Wescott. “A few are even being borrowed from York’s assistant principal, Shannon Hennigan.”

One of the projects this semester was to design and paint original squares to be used as the border to a Glenn York Elementary t-shirt quilt that will be donated to the York Elementary PTO Fall Festival Trunk or Treat. The quilt will be auctioned off to help the PTO earn money to purchase a second playground for the school.
