AP Capstone students from Alvin HS took a field trip to Galveston to perform up-close research about several areas around the island. This year’s trip was made possible by Ascend Cares Community Impact Grant that paid for 26 students and 3 chaperones to go to the Galveston Historical Society’s newly opened Ship to Shore/ELISSA exhibit where they experienced real-time/real–place research.

The students had the opportunity to explore all over the island including various monuments, memorials, statues around city hall, and then took the Historic Harbor Tour of the Seagull II. Other notable locations included Ashton Villa and the Texas Heroes Monument.

“The purpose of this trip is to demonstrate how research happens in places other than a computer,” Alvin HS AP Capstone teacher Kelley Smith shared. “The students signed up to be tour guides for each of the various places they visited and were asked to research and share their findings.”

AP Seminar is the first year of the AP Capstone program designed by College Board as a skills based course and introduction to research and source analysis and the kinds of writing students will do in college no matter the specific discipline.
