In September of 2021, the Alvin High School Manufacturing Program, led by instructors Doug Olson and Cliff McDonald, entered into a contract with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Industrial Crafts Competitionconfirming their intent to compete in the 2022 Industrial Craft Competition Skid Project. Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Industrial Crafts Competition promotes the development of skills in industrial crafts by students from Houston-area school districts.

In this competition, instructors meet with their students to determine a plan to complete a complicated and detailed project. The team decides who will be working on the skid and each team member’s role. To complete the project, students had to read issued construction drawings, and plan on how to complete the skid. During the project the students had to cut, weld, thread pipe, bend conduit, run electrical wires, work with pipe as well as structural steel and steel grating, clean the skid, paint the skid and then reassemble the finished project. The students had to read project drawings as well as isometric drawings to complete the skid to the standard that is required in the build booklet that was issued at the beginning of the project.

The students involved went to NRG and competed against 12 other schools. The projects and Documentation packages were picked up in the weeks leading up to the final presentation day. Presentation day consisted of an oral presentation of their experiences and about their skid. The students had 20 minutes allotted to their presentation to include introductions, a brief overview of key points about the project, and questions & answers from the judges. The Alvin High School Manufacturing Team was awarded Best Overall Safety, Best Presentation, and Best of Show.
