In September of 2020, the Alvin High School Manufacturing department entered into one of the biggest challenges that they have ever taken on. Manufacturing instructors, Mr. Doug Olson and Mr. Cliff McDonald, entered into a contract with the 2020 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Industrial Crafts Competitionconfirming our intent to compete in the 2021 Industrial Craft Competition Skid Project. In this competition, instructors meet with their students to determine a plan to complete a complicated and detailed project. The team decides who will be working on the skid and each team member’s role. To complete the project, students had to read issued construction drawings and plan on how to complete the skid. During the project, the students had to cut, weld, thread pipe, bend conduit, run electrical wires, run piping, work with pipe, as well as structural steel and steel grating, clean the skid, paint the skid and then reassemble the finished project. The entire time the students had to read project drawings as well as isometric drawings to complete the skid to the standard that is required in the build booklet we were issued at the beginning of the project.

The students had to overcome many obstacles along the way. They had to learn new skills and had to work together and learn how to solve problems. They were able to complete the skid on time to deliver a project they can be proud of.

On May 8, the students involved in this project went to NRG and competed against nine other schools. After submitting their documentation book and completing the oral presentation of their experiences and about their skid, Alvin High School Manufacturing Team received two awards. The first award was for Project Presentation and the second award was the Project Execution award. This is awarded to the team that best executed and completed the project.
