Being a part of a student council means helping a school be a better place and supporting the community through the act of giving. That’s what Duke Elementary advanced academic specialist and student council sponsor, Jodie Hall, wants her students to learn when they decide they want to get involved in StuCo. In March, Mrs. Hall found the perfect project for her 25- member council.

“I attend The Church on Master Road in Manvel and our pastor mentioned that the church is having a Diaper Drive and wanted to try and collect 1 million diapers. I thought, ‘What a great idea for StuCo to get involved.’”

Mrs. Hall and two coworkers, Melissa Bonner and Crystal Bryant, brought the idea to their student council students. The students were so excited to be a part of this project. The council didn't set an amount they wanted to collect. They said the class that brings the most diapers will get a pizza and popsicle party. The diaper drive started March 22 and ended April 9. The Duke student council ended up collecting almost 9,500 diapers!

“Each Friday our StuCo went to each class, picked up the diapers, counted them and sorted them by size,” Hall added.

Mrs. Hall’s husband, Manvel HS head football coach, Kevin Hall, loaded the diapers in his truck and the couple took them to The Church on Master Road where the diaper drive took place.

When asked why they wanted to participate in this event, Student Council member Brightyn Ruiz said, “I wanted to help moms that can't afford it. Helping people in need is very important and I am proud to be able to be a part of the diaper drive.”
