The pandemic has caused many students to learn from home in a virtual setting. One special Alvin ISD student saw there were students who did not have the proper equipment to allow them to effectively learn from home, so he stepped up to help bridge the digital divide for two of his fellow students.

Landon Taylor, a first grader at Pomona Elementary, runs a non-profit with his family called Landon's Closet. He uses his non-profit to give back to the community, especially students at his elementary school, Pomona Elementary.

“Every year, we do a back to school clothing fundraiser to donate three outfits to children of two single-parent families, but this year because of COVID-19, we decided that there would be a need for computers,” shared Landon’s mother, LaVerne Taylor. “Landon decided to donate laptops to two 1st grade classmates that were in need so they could continue their education at home through Alvin Virtual Learning. Landon is a 1st grader and we try to make sure that he is involved and we reach children in his age group.”

Landon has been giving through his non-profit, Landon’s Closet, since 2015.

In 2017, Landon’s Closet launched their Buddies & Books program. Each year for Christmas, through his Buddies & Books program, he donates at least 10 books with stuffed buddies. Landon’s Closet has also donated to the Women's Shelter, Sarah's Place, and two times a year, they do a Love Donation, where they donate clothing.

When asked what he enjoys about giving back to his fellow students and community, Landon responded, “I want kids that are less fortunate than I am to feel the joy and excitement that I feel when I get to open new toys or gifts.”

“Our ultimate goal is that Landon learns the spirit of giving back to his community and those who are less fortunate,” LaVerne said. “We want to make sure that all children are afforded the opportunity to learn and live their purpose.”
