This week, campuses across Alvin ISD celebrated Veterans Day and the sacrifices our military personnel have made to ensure our nation’s freedoms. Although many programs were unable to occur due to COVID restrictions, campuses around Alvin ISD did not miss the opportunity to celebrate in other ways.

The Marine Corps Jr. ROTC at Alvin High School led their yearly Veteran’s Day event to honor military members who served this country. The event, hosted outside due to COVID, started at Stadium Dr. Alvin High School MCJROTC cadets escorted veterans from all military branches to Alvin ISD Memorial Stadium where each veteran was honored. The MCJROTC, led by Maj. Timothy Flynn and First Sergeant Stephen Garcia, also sought out the participation of multiple campus organizations for the event.

“I think Veterans Day is about just letting the kids know that the freedoms that we have in this country are not taken for granted and that days like today are a good reminder to give honor to those who have served our country to ensure these freedoms,” shared Karen Taylor, Principal of Alvin High School.

Other campuses around the district created a “Wall of Honor” showcasing pictures of Veterans submitted by students, showed slideshows honoring veterans, and hosting drive-by Veterans Day Parades.

“Even though many of our campuses aren’t able to celebrate Veterans Day this year like we are accustomed to, I want our students to understand the true meaning of this holiday. It is very important to teach our kids about the sacrifice and service that it has taken over the years to keep our country safe and free,” said Carol Nelson, Alvin ISD Superintendent.
