Hurricane Laura made landfall on August 27, 2020 and wreaked havoc among eastern Texas and southern Louisiana. Homes were lost, businesses were shattered and even today, cities’ power and water have not been fixed. As the news of the devastation came in, the Manvel FFA officers, Benjamin Mooney, Natalie Flores, Matthew Ross, Caitlin Sheridan, Alyssa Whitehead, and Kasey Davis jumped into action to create the donation drive, “Fill the Trailer!” Donations began on August 28th and lasted through September 4th. A 24-foot gooseneck trailer that the FFA chapters use to haul cattle and other livestock was quickly cleaned and turned into a donation center on the Manvel High School campus. Word was sent out about the drive and it was no longer just Manvel High School that was donating-- there were schools, businesses, churches and individuals from all over the county dropping off donations. Volunteers hauled over thirty bags of feed and hay to a FFA chapter in need. There were so many items donated that the agriculture welding shop is stocked for another haul on another day. That is how amazing our community was at collecting and serving people who truly need it. Not to mention, the smiling faces in east Texas and Louisiana from people that appreciated everyone's help so very much.
