In an attempt to close the gap with students being out of school due to COVID and summer, Alvin ISD has created a 6-week summer program focusing on reading for our 2019-2020 kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2ndgrade regular and bilingual students. These students received a backpack with instructional books, fun books for reading, a notebook and writing prompts for journaling, and pencils and stickers. Teachers will be providing virtual guided reading lessons using the instructional books.

Over 1,000 students were recommended to the program by their Principals based on their reading levels.

“Many students are impacted by a decline in their reading development over the summer. We are working to eliminate summer reading loss for students who would benefit from extra opportunities to be engaged in fun, interactive literacy experiences. We want students to enjoy reading texts of their choice, participate in daily reading and writing activities and get specific support from a teacher. We want to grow strong readers by helping them fall in love reading,” shared Dr. Shandar Hobbs, Alvin ISD Director of Curriculum ELA, PK-12.

The program began on June 15 and will continue until July 24.
