Rodeo Palms Jr. High eighth grader, Nikhil Varma, is headed to the semifinals of the 2020 National Geographic GeoBee State Competition in Bedford, Texas on Friday, March 27. This is the second step to competing in the finals of the 32nd Annual National Geographic Bee in Washington D.C.

Varma won the 2020 Rodeo Palms Jr. High Geographic Bee back in January. It was the second time in two years the eighth grader was the school's champ. To determine each school champion, GeoBee competitions were held in schools throughout the state with students in the fourth through eighth grades. This year, an estimated 2.4 million students competed in the GeoBee, with 8,661 students becoming school champions. To qualify for the state competition, Varma needed to complete an online test that included questions like identifying which state is located west of Lake Huron, Minnesota or Vermont. The top 100 scores from school champions throughout the State of Texas qualified to join the March 27 competition.

Winners of the state competition move on to the finals May 18 through May 21 in Washington D.C.

Good luck Nikhil!
