Hasse Elementary was recently involved in some fun activities that combine art, math and puzzle solving. 5th grade math teacher, Jennifer Zamora decided to become a Rubik’s cube ambassador as an innovative way to teach her students geometry and problem solving. Zamora graciously offered the cubes to art teacher, Lynette LeCompte and made the suggestion to have her art students take the Rubik’s cube challenge. Students were challenged to use 100 cubes to make a portrait of the Mona Lisa. Students responded to the challenge and finished the portrait in less than a week. The students were so excited and enthusiastic to keep going so the next week students began work on a portrait of Vincent Van Gogh. Their latest challenge coincides with Black History Month and included 225 cubes. The subject was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Students were so excited to get it completed they gave up eating lunch with their classmates and recess time to work on the mosaic. Zamora and LeCompte are hoping that this is just the beginning and are planning to write a grant to purchase cubes for the school.

Hasse Elementary and Alvin ISD are also gearing up for Youth Art Month. It is a time observed throughout the whole month of March to promote the importance of art and art education. The goal of Youth Art Month is to emphasize the value of participating in art for all children. Throughout the month activities at Hasse will include dressing in special colors on certain days or like a famous artists such as Yayoi Kusama or beloved Bob Ross.

Big Art Day, which is celebrated on March 5th, is a statewide day to engage not only teachers and students but our communities as well in the arts. Hasse Elementary will be hosting a Family Arts Night for students and their families on March 5th from 6-7 in the Hasse Café. Activities will include photo booth, interactive mural, folk dancing, origami and string art stations to name a few.

Art is important to our children and helps broaden their imagination, promotes creative problem solving and is a crucial skill for today’s complex and ever changing world.
