As a fifth grader at EC Mason Elementary, Reaghan Valasquez was facing an obstacle most didn’t have to think about – accessibility. Reaghan was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect that occurs when the spine and spinal cord don't form properly, requiring the use of a walker to get around. One day, while the other kids were enjoying recess, Reaghan and her teacher, Gwyn Bray, decided to write a letter to their school principal in hopes of adding an accessible ramp leading to the playground area. Within two days of writing the principal, a once non-existent accessible asphalt sidewalk and ramp leading towards the playground, now stood.

Throughout junior high and high school, Reaghan continued to raise awareness for Spina Bifida. She organized the “Yellow Out” campaign, where she produced shirts, bracelets, and other merchandise. When she was in the seventh grade at Manvel Junior High, the first official “Yellow Out” day was hosted on World Spina Bifida Day, October 25.

In 2017, The Yellow Out Campaign, became an official 501 (c) 3 not for profit organization.

While interning for Houston Councilman Michael Kubosh, The City of Houston proclaimed October 25 as Yellow Out Day in honor of Reaghan and her foundation.  The City of Manvel followed shortly after, thus beginning a partnership between Reaghan, the City of Manvel, and mayor Debra Davison.

Recently, Davison contacted Reaghan, now a senior at Manvel High School, wanting her assistance to design an inclusive playground in the new Del Bello Lakes subdivision.

“I was so excited to be able to voice my opinion and help others facing the same challenges I’ve faced throughout my life. This playground will be a wonderful addition to our community and can’t wait until its opening in August 2020,” Reaghan shared.

Currently, The Yellow Out Campaign is working with the City of Manvel and raising money for a future all-inclusive playground to be built in the city. This weekend, The Yellow Out Campaign will be hosting a fundraiser at Holiday Acres Tree Farm.

As for her future plans, Reaghan plans to attend college and study music, eventually hoping to land a career in music performance.
