Bob and Betty Elementary was dedicated on Sunday, October 20, in a ceremony that honored the school’s namesakes and celebrated the school's future impact on students. Hundreds of people filled the cafeteria for the ceremony, which featured the Nelson Elementary choir.

Through the ceremony, Nelson family, friends, and colleagues showered praise on Bob and Betty Nelson. Ms. Nancy Crutchfield, who taught at Alvin Elementary with Betty Nelson, spoke on Mrs. Nelson’s dedication to literacy. Dr. Emily Nelson, granddaughter of Bob and Betty Nelson spoke about her memories of her grandparents. “It is such an honor for our family to have this building named after my grandparents, who gave so much to this community,” Nelson said.

After the ceremony, cake, cookies, and punch were served as guests toured the campus. The Nelson Elementary campus consists of new classrooms, science labs, a cafeteria with stage, library, kitchen, a music room, administrative offices, a clinic and a gym. Principal Tracy Olvera leads the campus and is excited to have had the opportunity to open this beautiful new school.

“Bob and Betty Nelson have created a lasting impact on the Alvin community,” Olvera said. “It is such an honor to be the principal of this beautiful campus named after such loving and caring individuals.”

Bob Nelson was born in Alvin, TX where he was the successful owner and operator of Towne Rexall Drug Store. He married Betty, originally from Galveston, and together they built their family’s legacy in the city of Alvin. Their children, and all of their grandchildren graduated from Alvin High School making at least three generations of Nelson’s who have lived and continue to live in the community.

Bob Nelson was known for being the pharmacist who went above and beyond for his patients. Many individuals have recounted memories of meeting him at the drug store after hours to make sure all patients were taken care of despite the time of day. Betty Nelson was an elementary school teacher who spread her love of learning through every lesson she taught. She filled her classroom with joy each and every day.

The Nelson family has impacted the Alvin community for many years and our community is thankful for their years of service.
