Marguerite Bagwell, Alvin High School Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Advisor was recently named to the HOSA Hall of Fame. The HOSA Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize individuals and companies who have rendered outstanding service to HOSA, health and biomedical science education and the health industry.
Mrs. Bagwell makes a difference by touching the emotional and physical needs of the HOSA members she encounters not just in the classroom, but daily with everyone she meets. This can especially be seen with her work as a mission dental care provider, a volunteer with Brazoria County Homeland Preparedness Project, her assistance with prison services, and her efforts to educate the community about mental illness by volunteering at the local National Alliance on Mental Illness chapter.
Before becoming a Health Science Technology teacher 21 years ago, Marguerite was a registered dental hygienist for 20 years. For over 15 years, Mrs. Bagwell has also served as a valuable volunteer with Brazoria County Homeland Preparedness Project. As a volunteer, she has recruited many new members for classes in CERT, MRC, and the Stop the Bleed program while assisting in disaster drills, health fairs, and valuable preparedness education programs.
Finally, and most recently, Mrs. Bagwell has been working with her local NAMI Gulf Coast Chapter to help spread the word about the need for support for those suffering mental illness, especially high school students. She has brought suicide prevention awareness into Alvin High School, taken students to speak to legislators at the state capitol, and helped the homeless, many of whom suffer from mental illness, at a local soup kitchen. She knows these actions can only make the Alvin High School HOSA chapter, and community, a safer place for all people.
