Nichols Mock Elementary

At the December 13, 2022 meeting, the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees approved the recommended changes to elementary boundary attendance zones as presented by the Alvin ISD School Boundary Advisory Committee.

According to the SBAC presentation, Alvin ISD continues to add over 1,000 students each year. This necessitates additional school facilities. Alvin ISD will open the new Nichols -Mock Elementary (August 2023), Bennet Elementary (August 2024), and Iowa Colony Jr. High (August 2024).

Due to continued growth and the opening of new schools, the District felt it was the appropriate time for Alvin ISD and the SBAC to develop new attendance boundary recommendations for elementary and jr. high schools to accommodate the opening of the three new campuses over the next two years.

“We are fortunate to have 33 wonderful schools, so wherever a child is zoned to attend, he or she will be greeted with engaging learning experiences, highly qualified teachers, and exceptional learning facilities,” said Carol Nelson, Alvin ISD Superintendent.

The initial meeting included district staff, parents, and community members. In three community meetings held in October, the district presented several attendance zone options. Community members, parents, and Alvin ISD employees attended these meetings, and the district used this and online feedback to create attendance zone options for consideration.

The SBAC presented a recommended zoning plan at the November 2022 Board meeting. They presented proposed boundary changes for elementary rezone effective fall, 2023, preliminary plans for elementary rezone effective fall, 2024, and preliminary plans for jr. high rezone effective fall, 2024.

The 2023-24 school year will see the opening of Nichols-Mock Elementary and the proposed boundary recommendation is that 369 students from Meridiana Elementary, which currently has over 1,000 students, be rezoned to the new elementary. Another notable change is a slight tweak to the Pomona Elementary boundary, sending a small number of students to Duke Elementary. This change will help in balancing the numbers between the two schools.

Families with children living in rezoned areas will receive a letter in early January to explain the specific changes and options for their children.
