In an effort to increase student engagement, improve student achievement, decrease negative social/emotional concerns, as well as decrease school safety concerns that result from cell phone use, Alvin ISD has updated our policy in the Student Handbook on the Possession and Use of Personal Telecommunications Devices, Including Cell Phones/Smart Watches and Other Electronic Devices:

The district permits students to possess personal cell phones for safety purposes, however smart watches and earbuds are not permitted.  

The increased reliance on cell phone and social media usage has contributed to a variety of negative consequences for youth and adolescents; increased mental distress and distractibility, chronic sleep deprivation, and negative effects of cognitive control, academic performance and socioemotional functioning.  There is a growing need to navigate the challenges brought about by use of personal telecommunications devices for the benefit of our students. 

We understand that student cell phones can assist with communication between students and families as many of our students are involved in extracurricular and after school activities.  Therefore, students are still able to be in possession of their cell phone during the school day. However, the cell phone should remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes.  

If a parent needs to communicate an urgent message with their student, they are able to call the school and the message will be sent to their child.  If a student needs to make an emergency call during the day, they are able to call from their designated AP office or the front office.  

If a student chooses to not follow this policy and has their cell phone, smart watch, and/or ear buds out for any reason without permission, the item(s) will be confiscated and turned into the office.  Disciplinary consequences may be administered, which could also result in a $15 fine before the item(s) are returned to the student or family member.

En un esfuerzo por aumentar la participación de los estudiantes, mejorar el rendimiento de los estudiantes, disminuir las preocupaciones sociales/emocionales negativas, así como disminuir las preocupaciones de seguridad escolar que resultan del uso de teléfonos celulares, Alvin ISD ha actualizado nuestra política en el Manual del estudiante sobre la posesión y el uso de objetos personales, dispositivos de telecomunicaciones, incluidos teléfonos móviles/relojes inteligentes y otros dispositivos electrónicos:

El distrito permite que los estudiantes posean teléfonos celulares personales por motivos de seguridad, sin embargo, no se permiten relojes inteligentes ni auriculares.

Se pueden administrar consecuencias disciplinarias, lo que también podría resultar en una multa de $15 antes de que los artículos se devuelvan al estudiante o miembro de la familia.
