When a person is unable to produce speech sounds correctly (articulation) or fluently (stuttering), or has problems with his or her voice, then he or she has a Speech Disorder.  When a person has trouble understanding others (receptive language), or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings completely (expressive language), then he or she has a Language Disorder. These communication disorders can occur as a result of a medical problem or an unknown cause. (American Speech Language Hearing Association)  If a communication disorder has a significant impact on the educational performance of a student ages 3-21, the intervention of a Speech-Language Pathologist might be needed.

Alvin ISD is committed to serving students with a continuum of speech therapy interventions that support a student's communication disorder in the educational setting.  The ARD/IEP committee determines which of the following services a student would need if they demonstrate a qualifying communication disorder:

Speech Only Drop In Services - speech therapy services for children ages 3-5 that do not attend public school are brought to the child's home campus by their parents for direct therapy by the Speech Pathologist.  Services are provided individually or in small groups in the speech therapy room/setting.

Pull-Out Services - students who are currently attending public school are pulled out of the instructional setting into the speech therapy room/setting for small group or individual intervention.

Classroom Based Services - speech therapy services are provided to students within the instructional classroom setting and other natural school environments to assist with naturalistic teaching and generalization of skills.

Indirect Services - services are provided for and on behalf of students with communication disorders and include (but not limited to): consultation, instructional support, parent training/support, assistive technology support, augmentative communication support, monitoring IEP progress. 

Parents who are concerned with their child's speech or language development should contact their child's elementary school's Speech Pathologist to schedule a screening.
