English As A Second Language (ESL)

ELEMENTARY- Content based ESL

In elementary, students who qualify for ESL services are taught in monolingual English classrooms by specially trained and certified teachers. Teachers provide sheltered instruction and students attain English proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking and transition successfully into the mainstream classroom.

Emergent bilingual students receive all content area instruction (English Language Arts, Reading, Math, Science & Social Studies) by teachers certified in ESL and the appropriate grade level and content area.

SECONDARY- Pull Out ESL

In 6th to 12th grades students receive intensive English language instruction through their ESL class. Teachers in all other content areas are sheltered trained to support the needs of Emergent Bilingual students. Depending on the language proficiency of the student, the student may also attend and additional reading class for extra language support. The goal is for all students to achieve the English proficiency necessary to graduate high school and continue to higher levels of education.

Emergent bilingual students receive instruction in English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) by and ESL certified teacher.

A pull out model can be implemented

  • By an ELAR and ESL certified teacher within the ELAR classroom.

  • Through co-teaching of an ESL certified teacher and ELAR certified teacher.

  • Through an additional ESL/ELAR course provided by an ESL and ELAR certified teacher.
